Competitors take on the game's nine-hole, par-36 course, with qualifying and tournament performances helping determine who emerges as the tour's early contenders.

"We wanted to take something that people already know and turn it into a legitimate competitive golf experience," Zobrist said. "The game is simple, but once you're competing against other people, every shot matters."

Speirs said the open-qualifying format was an important part of the league's launch.

"We didn't want it to just be a closed group of players," Speirs said. "If you're good enough to shoot the score, you should have a chance to get in."

Qualifying Underway

The first WiiGA Tour Open Qualifiers began Aug. 30, officially marking the start of competition for the new league.

Players compete over the nine-hole, par-36 course, with the top qualifying scores earning opportunities to compete in upcoming tour events. The system is intended to give new players a pathway onto the tour while creating a competitive race for tournament spots.

The WiiGA Tour will also maintain player rankings based on tournament performance, giving competitors the chance to build their standing throughout the season.

For Zobrist and Speirs, the goal is to capture the drama of professional golf while keeping the accessibility that made Wii Sports Golf popular in the first place.

"It's golf, just in a different form," Speirs said. "You can have one bad hole and completely change the leaderboard."

With the first qualifiers now underway, the WiiGA Tour has officially entered its inaugural era — nine holes, par 36, and a new leaderboard waiting to be written.
