The first scores are in at the inaugural WiiGA Open, and commissioner Dylan Speirs has wasted little time putting himself in contention. The opening group took on the Classic Course at Sampey Lounge on Saturday night, with Speirs firing a 4-under round to establish the early clubhouse lead on the nine-hole, par-36 layout.
Speirs separated himself from a group featuring three other members of the WiiGA Tour's inaugural field. T Burkett turned in a 5-over round, while Alex Snodgrass finished at 7-over and Titus Whitfield at 8-over.
"It feels good to get the first one in," Speirs said. "You can prepare for it all you want, but once you're actually playing and you know every shot counts, it's different. I'm happy with where I put myself."
The 4-under showing adds another strong round to Speirs' early WiiGA résumé, but with much of the field still waiting to play, his spot atop the leaderboard is far from secure. For Burkett, Snodgrass and Whitfield, Saturday night's round provided their first taste of official WiiGA tournament competition — and their first opportunity to put a number on the board in the tour's inaugural Open.
Looking Ahead: Sunday's 2 P.M. Group
The action returns to Sampey Lounge at 2 p.m. Sunday, when Isaiah Hines, Michael Ramares and Heath Chupp take on the Classic Course.
They'll do so with a clear target in front of them: Speirs at 4-under.
With just nine holes to make a move, a hot start could quickly shake up the leaderboard as the second group gets underway.
Speirs has set the mark. Now it's time to see if anyone can catch him.
